Tuesday Sept. 10

0 miles

This morning we took a walk through Johnsonville State Historic Park and had a history lesson. This 1500 acre park focuses on the 1864 Battle of Johnsonville and consists of 2 immaculately preserved Civil War fortifications and a mile of earthen entrenchments which were constructed between 1863 & 1864.

Could this have been how the original cannons looked when they were aimed toward the opposite shore during the Battle of Johnsonville?

As you look toward the other shore you can still see a piece of the original stone that was part of the bridge support for the Nashville and Northwestern railroad built in 1863. This railroad was built to get supplies to the soldiers.

There are actually 2 cemeteries in the park. One from the Civil War era which is basically just a few flat stones and not well marked and one from 1880’s.

We were going to move on today but after our walk a thunderstorm rolled in so we decided to stay put for another day.
