Sunday Oct. 6
106 miles Chattanooga, TN to Guntersville, AL.
It was time to move on so we pulled off the dock at 0930. A
few miles downstream we passed by the Baylor School .
Founded in 1893 as a private prep school, it later became a military school and
most recently a co-educational private high school.
A little farther downstream we passed back into Central Time
Zone and got a nice view of Signal
Mountain . This mountain
was used by Native Americans to send fire and smoke signals across the Tennessee Valley and later the Union army used it
as a communications station during the Civil War.
Only 1 lock to go through today and they were all set for us
when we arrived so we could go right through. Not far past the Nickajack Lock
we crossed back into Alabama .
A little farther and we came to the South
Pittsburg Bridge .
This bridge features a suspended arch, and the horizontal clearance is the
widest of any bridge on the Tennessee River .
The wind started to pick up and we actually had 1 foot waves
on the river. This is the first time since we left Lake
Michigan that we saw white caps on the water. We have Sirrus
weather on our GPS so we were keeping an eye on it. We decided to keep going to
Guntersville instead of anchoring out. We arrived in Guntersville at 1910 and
so did the rain. We got soaked tying up the boat.
Tracked you down on the map. That was quite a "side trip" you took. Beautiful country you are seeing. Some day.....at least we will have some good mentors when the day comes.
