40 miles       Mile Hammock Bay, NC to Morehead City, NC

The winds were going to get up to gusts of 30 mph. today so we decided to go to Morehead City to a dock. On the way we passed through Bogue Sound which is a very large body of water that separates the Bogue Banks on the Atlantic side from the mainland. There are some small islands in this sound that aircraft used during WWII for target practice.

The ICW goes right through Camp Lejeune.
These signs sure give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Here are some of the practice fields.

Going up the ICW you are supposed to keep the green on your right and the red on your left.
(which way do I go, which way do I go???)

 Bogue Sound

When we pulled into Morehead City we had a pleasant surprise. The USS New York was docked there. This ship at 864 feet is an amphibious transport dock used by the navy and built from steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. It gave us goose bumps as we passed within 100 feet of it to get to our slip.

Yes they have guns. Both on the front and back of the ship.
