Thurs. May 8    0745/1500

58 miles       Barefoot Marina, Myrtle Beach SC to Carolina Beach, NC

We said an early goodbye to our friends to move on farther north. There were 2 trouble spots for us to get through today. The first called the rock pile was an area of solid rock that the ICW was charted to go thru. This was definitely an area to go through at high tide. (which we did)

Cruising along the ICW.

  In the Rock Pile channel.

Farther along the ICW.

Narrow sand bar between the ICW and Atlantic.

We passed several little seafood markets. Just pull up and buy fresh seafood right off the boats.

The second area was Cape Fear River (the name alone sends chills down your spine). This is a very wide river that comes in off the Atlantic, is know to have very strong winds and current, and also is a high traffic spot for cargo ships and ferries. The ICW merges with this river for several miles. We got lucky with light winds, and only had to keep out of the way of 1 cargo ship and 2 ferries.

Our stop for the night in a little bay by the town of Carolina Beach, NC.
