38 miles         Amsterdam, NY to Herkimer, NY

Just when we thought we were out in the middle of nowhere a cluster of houses, a little town, or a lock would pop up reminding us we were back in civilization. Today’s cruise took us through 6 locks, one of which is not only the highest lift on the Erie canal at 40’ it is one of only 2 locks in North America where the entrance gate is lifted above the boater instead of a swing gate.

 

This is a Guard gate. It can be lowered to stop or slow down water flow.

 

 One side there were train tracks and the other a highway for part of the way.
