Thurs. June 19      1000/1500
9 miles             Peterborough to Lakefield (lock 26)
½ mile into our day we came to one of the most interesting locks we will encounter on this trip. Lock 21 is a 65’ lift lock which took 8 years to build and was completed in 1904. With a height of 19.8 meters, it is the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world. To raise boats, the upper chamber is over balanced by taking on an extra 30cm of water. Once the water is added it takes about 1 min. to go up 65’.  The rest of the day was spent going through 6 more locks and some very narrow sections on the waterway. We stopped for the night at lock 26 in Lakefield.

Before leaving in the morning we took a walk and found some beautiful gardens.

Peterborough Lift Lock. We entered the chamber on the right.
(If you were coming from the other way you would enter the chamber on the left).

 The chamber from the top.

View from in the chamber after going up 65'.

View of the chamber as we left.

Cruising along the canal. Very weedy.

Trenton University (I guess they couldn't decide on what size window to use).

Lock 22. We had to wait for down bound boats to come out of the lock.
(it gets a little narrow some times)
